The need of Game Development

The video Game Development business has proven again and time again that it adores winners.  At the same time, it seems like new studios and student developers are popping up on a regular basis, all trying to build their first successful game. While we all enjoy a good success story, many people both inside and outside the business are baffled as to why a certain title has reached such a high level of success.
This lack of awareness, I feel, stems from the romanticism that surrounds game productions. This is especially true if we solely view games as works of art that aren’t bound by any restraints or practical considerations. My idea is that we should debunk this viewpoint in order to have more fruitful discussions about game design and why certain projects succeed (or not).
